Nijo-jo, Kyoto

Nijo Castle is one of the many World Heritage Sites in Kyoto. Its construction was completed in 1626 as the Kyoto home of the shoguns who had seized power of Japan. While their capital city was Edo (now Tokyo), the military leaders (shoguns) wanted to flaunt their new-found power to the Emperor still living in the Imperial Palace in Kyoto, just a short distance away from Nijo.
