Just south of Krishna’s Butterball, Mamallapuram Hill rises up containing many hideaway rock carvings and and ancient temples. In certain areas, you will turn a corner and come upon a view that has an almost Biblical feel to it. A person can wander around the hill for an hour or two without exhausting all the possibilities. The pinnacle of the hill has fine ocean views to the east.
The Raya Gopura, dating from the 16th century, is probably an unfinished temple entrance tower (gopuram).
No one seems to know the meaning of these type of geometrical carvings.
Stairs hand-carved out of huge boulders are found throughout the hill.
