To the south of the Meiji Shrine in Yoyogi Park sit a pair of stadiums built for the 1964 Olympics. They still remain futuristic looking today and in fact will be used again for 2020 Tokyo Olympics. These two facilities were used for the swimming, diving and basketball events. The 1964 Olympics were extremely important for Japan to show the world that they had recovered from the devastation of World War II in just 20 short years. Indeed, much of the infrastructure of roads, subways and the famous Shinkansen (bullet trains) developed to facilitate the Olympics is still on display today.
