Yanaka, Tokyo

Just to the north within walking distance of Ueno is the district of Yanaka. Yanaka has a mystical quality about it, not least attributed to its amazing survival of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 (which burned down most of Shitamachi), the WWII firebombing of Tokyo, and the post war urban modernization. Perhaps the best way to portray the district is through its ancient cemetery.

This first shot has a nice old/new element, with the city’s tallest new structure, the Tokyo Skytree, visible in the distance to the east.tyan1tyan2tyan3
