Kyoto Station is the main rail transit hub with dozens of rail lines, the bullet trains and subways all passing under or through. It is a huge thing, one Japan’s largest buildings and the second largest train station in the country. The station is an architectural extravaganza; designed by Hiroshi Hara and opened in 1997, it was very controversial in its futuristic design with the conservative cultural heritage set of Kyoto. Nevertheless, its completion set into motion a wave of high-rise construction that has altered Kyoto’s landscape.
The rooftop features a garden with 360 degree views over the city.
One prominent feature of the design is an 11-story staircase leading to the roof from the arrival hall. It is fitted with computer controlled lighting that is in constant motion.
The landmark Kyoto Tower sits on top of the building directly across the the station.
