The city of Hualien is known as the gateway to Taroko Gorge National Park. Since I visited Taroko last year, I decided to spend a few days in Hualien exploring the local bike ways and other features. It is a truly beautifully located city with laid-back people who enjoy their nature.
A bike way running along a canal looking up into the mountains that I am about to ascend.
Up in those mountains is Liyu Lake, my destination. It is a spectacularly pretty little lake with a nice bike-only path around it. The route is about 30 km return, with a beautiful long downhill descent overlooking the Hualien valley and the ocean.
