Kaohsiung City, Taiwan

Next up on my Taiwan adventure is Kaohsiung City. This is Taiwan’s 2nd city on the far southwestern side. Historically a heavy and grim industrial city, Kaohsiung has been transformed over the last decade into a very modern city with an excellent mass rapid transit system, landscaped waterfronts, bicycle paths, shopping and culture. All this while still retaining a nod to the city’s industrial past.

My AirBnB stay in Kaohsiung was just a few short blocks from the former industrial harbor, an area that has morphed into what is now called the Pier 2 Art District. The neighborhood is still Chinese blue-collar, with corner businesses dealing in heavy marine spare parts juxtaposed across from new green areas with running paths. Here are some photos of the arts district.

KAD1 That’s the Tuntex Tower in the background, which was Taiwan’s tallest building before Taipei 101 was built. The shape of the structure is based upon the Chinese character for the word “tall”.
